what is pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strength and balance the body. According to its founder, Joseph Pilates, the center or core of the body is where the initiation of movement should come from.
Pilates is a series of exercises that work the body from head to toe. The original exercises known today as “matwork” are done on the floor. The Pilates equipment uses spring tension to challenge and support the body and truly compliments the challenging matwork exercises.

Pilates, when practiced faithfully, yields many benefits. Some of the benefits include increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing, and increased strength and flexibility. Overall posture, balance and core strength improves. The benefits are endless.

A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion. Joseph H. Pilates
